Hello parents, nannies, educators, teachers and babysitters! I am so excited to start this blog and share my thoughts, ideas, feelings and experiences. It's been a long 14 years in the field of education and early childhood, so I have lots in store to share with you. But first, I should probably introduce myself!
I'm Coach Erica. As I already stated I've been teaching for 14 years now and I absolutely love every aspect of what I do. I am a teacher turned professional nanny turned nanny agency owner. Some of my experience includes headstart, behavioral management, kindergarten readiness, special needs and education, autism, Montessori, learning through play, curriculum and lesson planning, administration...the list goes on! And with each of those, I can guarantee you I put my best foot forward to learn and understand best practices for all.
I know you're probably wondering how I went from one profession to the next. My answer? COVID-19! Once the pandemic shut down our schools and childcare centers for the safety of everyone, I honestly didn't know what my next move was. All I knew was teaching. I got my first Montessori job right after high school graduation as an assistant and my career grew from there. I went on to get my Child Development Associates followed by a degree in early childhood education. I became very good at what I did and expanded my knowledge every opportunity I had. "So what now?", which I'm sure was half the worlds thought process during this time! Shortly after, I got my first Nanny family and let me tell you, I was inspired from day one.
Now, lets be honest here. Being a teacher does not automatically make me a Mary Poppins. I wasn't in my element (the classroom) where my confidence easily shined through, but in someone's home. The parents weren't dropping the kiddos off and saying good-bye, but more so "I'll be down for lunch". It was something to get used to. And I did! And you know what else I did? TEACH! This particular family did not do screen time. And I don't mean just during the day or because they wanted me to engage. Nope! It was just something normalized in their household. Watching a movie was a special treat on holidays and maybe even a gloomy rainy day, but other than that, we were hands on, experimenting, crafting, learning and enjoying the outdoors for the entire 9 hour shift. I was in awe!
I eventually started to book other nanny jobs and grow my reputation. Booking high profile families in the most beautiful houses located in the most prestigious neighborhoods. And I heard something similar from every family I came across. That their previous nannies were not as engaged as I was. From festive holiday parties, weekly lesson plans, potty training, preschool and kindergarten prep...I was only doing what I knew best, but to them, it was a breakthrough. And THAT is when that little light bulb came on and honestly, it still shines bright to this day. "That's it!" I thought to myself. There isn't enough Professional Nannies providing enrichment. Sure, playing with toys and doing arts and crafts is great, but these kiddos are sponges and they need more enrichment and experiences because well, They're our future.
So I started Childhood FUNdamentals. A rare Professional Nanny and childcare agency that goes beyond recruiting and placements. Providing services for the kiddos, the parents and the nannies. Helping everyone reach their full potential. From how to be an ethical employer, to booking high profile families with a stellar nanny resume to walking into kindergarten ready to learn. I am so proud of Childhood FUNdamentals and the rapid growth after only two years. And there is so much more in store! So be prepared to laugh, cry, learn and grow with me on my new blog. Buckle up.
And that's me! Coach Erica in a nutshell, or a few paragraphs rather. Ready to connect with parents, educators, nannies and anyone else in this lovely field of education. We are just getting started!
Educationally,
Coach Erica
